CEANNT TRAIN Station will be the location for the launch of UnSelfing/Arrivals, a programme of visual arts exhibitions, performances, and encounters, which will take place in Galway across 2020.
The programme title and theme comes from Iris Murdoch’s concept of ‘UnSelfing’ - the idea that in order to find truth, it is necessary to seek outside of one’s self; to be attentive to the world, and to be curious about the people, places and ideas surrounding us.
The UnSelfing/Arrivals launch is on Saturday February 29 at 1.15pm at Ceannt Train Station, and includes a newly commissioned performance by Isadora Epstein entitled Weather Gods. The performance will take place on a train travelling between Galway and Gort, to represent interior and exterior journeys.
Attendees will board the 1.45pm train where Epstein will perform Weather Gods, accompanied by musicians Davy Kehoe, Daniel McAuley, and Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh. On arrival in Gort, passengers will attend a reception and the official launch of TULCA’s 2020 UnSelfing programme at Gort Library, with performances and readings from the work of Iris Murdoch, followed by transport by bus back to Galway at 5pm.
The inaugural exhibition of the UnSelfing programme, Deep States, opens on Friday March 6 at 6pm at Nuns Island Theatre. It features the artists Dominic Thorpe, Veronika Merklein, Eunseo Yi, Andrej Mircev, and Nikoleta Markovic, who will present installations and performances to explore ideas of freedom and responsibility, and how they impact the personality and character of individuals and society. Curated by Helen Carey, it runs until March 27.
