THE GODFATHER II is a classic of American cinema, and also that very rare thing - a sequel which surpasses the original, and there will be a rare chance to see it on the big screen next week.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and starring Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, this 1974 masterpiece will be shown in the Pálás Cinema as part of the 'I Can't Believe You Haven't Seen...' screenings, presented by Strange Brew. The films are chosen by Róisín Dubh music promoter Gugai, and are a mixture of classics, cult favourites, and overlooked gems. As Gugai says, "Without having seen them, your life is incomplete."
The Godfather II will be screened on Wednesday February 19. Other highlights will be Plan 9 From Outer Space (April 22 ), widely regarded as the worst film ever made, but which has developed a cult following for precisely that reason; the Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone spaghetti western par excellence, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (May 20 ); the much loved John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd comedy The Blues Brothers (August 19 ); and Stanley Kubrick's towering horror film The Shining (October 21 ), adapted from the Stephen King novel, and featuring Jack Nicholson in scintillating form.
Other screenings are Office Space (March 18 ), Dazed & Confused (June 17 ), Robocop (July 22 ), sci-fi classic The Day The Earth Stood Still (November 18 ), and seasonal favourite Scrooged (December 23 ).
All screenings take place at 8.30pm. For tickets see www.palas.ie The screening will include a free can of Little Fawn IPA, and the occasional free ticket to a Strange Brew gig.
