Cannon welcomes Taoiseach`s commitment to Athenry data centre

An East Galway TD has welcomed confirmation that An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has asked Tim Cook that Apple would either develop its data centre site at Athenry or make it available to another investor.

Minister for the Diaspora and International Development Ciaran Cannon has said that the move is an indication of the government’s ongoing commitment to the site and to maximising Athenry’s development potential. He also said that no avenue will remain unexplored in the journey to attract foreign direct investment into the town.

“Athenry has been the recipient of significant Government investment in the past few years with the soon to commence BIA Innovator Campus and completely new educational facilities for Presentation College and Clarin College among those important projects”.

“I have always been a keen advocate of the town’s business potential and I`m very pleased that An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has confirmed today (20/1/20 ) that he has again raised the issue of Apple’s data centre site in Athenry with CEO Tim Cook and stressed that the government is still anxious to see Apple locating there,” he said

“He also confirmed the ongoing support of the people of Athenry and asked Mr Cook that Apple would either develop the site or make it available to another investor. Mr Cook undertook to revert to An Taoiseach on the matter,” said Minister Cannon.

“The fact that An Taoiseach chose to raise the issue of the data centre site with Tim Cook is a strong indication of our government’s continued commitment to Athenry and to maximising its development potential”.

“Moreover, I can assure the people of Athenry that no avenue will remain unexplored in the journey to attract major foreign direct investment in Athenry,” he concluded.
