Rabbitte questions accessibility at polling stations in county Galway

Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East, Anne Rabbitte, says Galway County Council need to ensure all polling stations are wheelchair accessible to accommodate wheelchair users casting their vote in the General Election on February 8.

She said that constituents have raised their concerns with her that the polling station at Brackloon National School will be inaccessible for those in wheelchairs.

“At the last local and European Elections, it was the case that this polling station was inaccessible for wheelchair users. I understand alternative arrangements were made for one person who was unable to vote at this polling station.

“In my opinion, it is completely disgraceful that someone in a wheelchair would not have the same access and be facilitated to participate in the democratic process at the polling station local to them like anyone else.

“I am calling on Galway County Council to carry out a full review of the accessibility of polling stations throughout Galway East ahead of polling day. It is imperative that no one is put out by poor planning,” concluded Deputy Rabbitte.
