New Year, new location. Yes, one of Galway's favourite Latin American restaurants, Sangria, has upped sticks from its Buttermilk Walk home and moved just around the corner to 19 Middle Street; a location which allows for more space, more comfort, and more atmosphere.
But despite the venue is different, Sangria will continue to provide guests and locals with a truly authentic Latin American food experience. Latin America cuisine has been a food delight that has long pleased the palates of people throughout the world.
Many of us will be familiar with the vibrant and fresh flavours of Latin dishes soldered with an historical Spanish influence in terms of Latin American meals. But since opening in August on Buttermilk Walk, Sangria has been bringing the culinary joys from all over Central and South America to the locals and tourists of Galway. Managed by the husband and wife team of Byron Godoy Flores from Antigua in Guatemala and Mary Carroll Godoy, New Jersey, in the USA, the casual tapas restaurant aims to showcase authentic Latin American food and culture to the city.
Combining the use of ancient Mayan cooking techniques and fresh, local ingredients, Flores creates some of best Latin American culinary dishes that a palate can taste in the west of Ireland, with special emphasis on Flores' native Guatemala. Try the ceviche, arguably Guatemala's best dish, a lemon cured prawn or mixed seafood in a salad of chopped tomato, red onion, and coriander, or maybe a vegetarian option is your preferred choice, check out the dobladas, and for the carnivores among us, the meat tapas has a huge choice from which to select. Whatever dish that gets the selection, make sure to sample Sangria's handmade corn tortillas and open flamed blackened chilli pastes.
Of course, a drink to complement your meal is absolutely necessary and the restaurant has developed its own sangria to complete the culinary trip to Latin America. Made for adults, the in house sugar syrups and fresh squeezed fruit juices are the recipe for an undeniable treat.
