€8.3 million in funding has been committed by Government to fund the proposed Galway Regional Aquatic and Fitness Centre in Cappagh, in the West of the City.
This will involve the construction of an International Short Course Event Pool and an International Standard Water Polo Pitch.
Fine Gael TD for Galway West, Hildegarde Naughton, supported the project and made representations to her colleague, Minister for Sport, Brendan Griffin TD.
Deputy Naughton welcomed the funding announcement this morning and said it would provide a major boost to Galway City and the greater area.
“This development in Cappagh will provide much needed facilities on the west side of the City as well as providing a regional training centre. Knocknacarra and surrounding areas are expanding at pace and we need facilities to match,” she said.
“This facility will also provide a spacious gym, modern fitness studios, a cafe, an extended car park, sauna and steam rooms and a spin cycle studio. It really will be a world class facility for the community.”
“I’m pleased to have been able to support this funding. The project will result in both sporting and economic benefits for the local area and the region as a whole,” she said.
