Scoil Chaitriona in Renmore urgently needs a new school building as it is "not acceptable" for its more than 800 pupils to have to use prefabs, some of which are in "very poor condition".
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway City East councillor Alan Cheevers, who is calling on the Department of Education to provide funding for a new school building, pointing out that the current building has "inadequate heating systems" and is "energy inefficient compared to modern standards".
Cllr Cheevers said the school has had to spent "hundreds of thousands of euro" on maintenance works, but that the building is "continuing to deteriorate each year". He said: "It is such a shame Scoil Chaitriona does not have a building to match the exceptional reputation it has for providing a quality education service. This school is too important a resource to be ignored any longer."
