Peace protest on Saturday against current US-Iran tensions

Galwegians are being asked to 'express their opposition to another bloody and unnecessary conflict in the Middle East'

As fears rise that another "forever war" could erupt in the Middle East in the aftermath of the USA's assassination of Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani, Galwegians are being asked to show their opposition to this dangerous drift.

Soleimani was killed by a US drone strike at Baghdad airport on January 3. Iran has said it will avenge the killing by retaliation against American interests, while US president Donal Trump, in bellicose Tweets, appears to have said the US may target Iranian cultural sites as part of any response to Iranian retaliation. Iraq has called for the expulsion of US troops from it's territory, while European countries have urged restraint and for both sides to "de-escalate" the crisis.

The Galway Alliance Against War is calling on Galwegians to "express their opposition to another bloody and unnecessary conflict in the Middle East" by attending the 'We Want Peace – No War With Iran' event at the junction of Shop Street and Mainguard Street, this Saturday at 12 noon.

"We are entering the third decade of never-ending US wars in the Middle East, it is time to cry Stop!" said a GAAW spokesperson. "The provocative and sinister assassination of Soleimani could result in a global conflict. We must act. The Irish Government must condemn this killing. We now know from the Iraqi PM that President Trump requested him personally to engage with General Soleimani to reduce tensions in the region between Tehran, Washington and Saudi Arabia. The Iranian general was therefore murdered while involved in peace talks."
