Opera, ballet, and book club at the Pálás

A feast of event cinema awaits in January

SOME OF the finest operas and ballets of all time, and one of the most famous books Charles Dickens wrote, can be enjoyed at a new series of event screenings at the Pálás, and at the cinema's book club.

The cinema will screen broadcasts of the operas Wozzeck, from The Metropolitan in New York (January 11 ) and the Royal Opera's production of La Boheme (January 29 ). There will also be the ballets Sleeping Beauty from the Royal Ballet (January 16 ) and the Bolshoi Ballet's production of Giselle (January 26 ). Art lovers can look forward to Lucien Freud: A Self Portrait (January 14 ).

Cinema book club

The cinema book club takes place on the last Tuesday of the month and is led by Charlene Lydon. The idea is to read the chosen book each month in the lead up to the film screening, watch the film, followed by a discussion in the bar afterwards. This month's book is Dickens' The Personal History of David Copperfield. A film of the novel will be shown on January 28 at 6.30pm. Pálás partners with Charlie Byrnes on cinema book club and customers can avail of 10 per cent off the book and your cinema ticket by mentioning the Pálás cinema book club.
