Greta Thunberg, the impressive teenage environmental activist, has had a decisive impact on our young artists, judging from the range of thoughtful and powerful statements presented in this year’s Christmas Art Competition.
The overall winner (on our front cover ) is Dija Mazonaite (16 years ) from Clareview Park, Ballybane, a student at Colaiste Bhaile Chlair. The judges were impressed with Dija’s simple, direct message: ‘I’m melting - can you save me?’
Thanks to our main sponsor, Ireland West Airport Knock, Dija has won two return flights to Palma Majorca with Lauda departing on Tuesday 31st of March 2020 returning on Friday 3rd of April 2020. This includes 3 nights in a self-catering apartment, twin room for 2 people, free car parking at Ireland West Airport Knock and complimentary use of the lounge at Ireland West Airport Knock and €500 cheque from the Galway Advertiser.
An art competition, asking for action on climate change, was a challenging theme, but that was to underestimate the impact climate change is having on us all, and the awareness by young people that their future world is threatened. It is the story of the decade, and young people have marched, demonstrated, petitioned, and now painted for action.
There was unanimity in the very large entry we received, and judging from the variety of names (it was quite an international entry ), the message was clear: that climate change is an important issue: ‘Do something; we want a clean planet to live in.”
Congratulations to Dija, for your arresting painting, with the added brilliant touch of acknowledging that this was the Christmas season as well. Well done.
