Connacht Rugby and west of Ireland based company Portwest are joining forces to attempt a world record on Saturday. And in doing so, they plan to light up the Galway Sportsground at the Connacht versus Munster interprovincial clash.
When Connacht Rugby takes on Munster at 5.15pm, Portwest will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the most people wearing high visibility vests in one place.
As part of Portwest’s ‘Be Bright on Safety’ campaign’, the manufacturer of outdoor leisure, safety and workwear has chosen Saturday’s Guinness PRO14 match as the location for this once in a lifetime event, which will also highlight the importance of safety for all road users.
The current record is 2,499 people - achieved by Mental Health Australia (Australia ) in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, on October 10 this year - so hopes are high a new World Record to be achieved at the Sportsground, where extra seating is being installed for this popular festive fixture, increasing the capacity to its maximum of 8,129.
Owen Hughes, managing director of Portwest is excited about Saturday’s event, and the support from Connacht Rugby.
“While it is exciting and will be fun for fans from both provinces, the campaign also has an important message about road safety, which is something that affects us all. We are really hoping we’ll get the world record attempt over the line this weekend,” he says.
The location and the date is also special because December 21 is the shortest day of the year, and with many fans travelling to Galway, the game is the perfect time to attempt to smash the current record, while highlighting the importance of road safety.
Anyone attending the game is encouraged to take part to help break the record and cheer on Connacht.
Portwest, with 115 years’ experience in manufacturing workwear and safety clothing, will be supplying some 5,000 hi-vis vests on the night.
