Rents in Galway are “out of control and are continuing to rise at a high rate”, and this requires both the freezing of rents and enacting measures to “put money back into the pockets of workers and families”.
This is the view of Sinn Féin Galway West General Election candidate, Mairéad Farrell, who is calling on all Galway TDs to support Sinn Féin’s Rent Freeze (Fair Rent ) Bill 2019 currently being debated in the Dáil. A final vote on it is expected to take place today.
The Bill, if enacted, would freeze all rents on existing and new tenancies in Galway for a period of three years. The legislation also calls on the Minister for Finance to introduce a refundable tax credit of up to €1,500 for renters.
“I am urging all our local Galway TDs to back this Bill,” said Ms Farrell. “We have seen Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and Noel Grealish all coming together to keep Eoghan Murphy in a job recently as Housing Minister. Let’s see that same team work to protect people who want to keep a roof over their head. Galway renters deserve better and all our TDs have a chance next Tuesday to give them a much needed break.”
