The commencement of the installation of new LED lighting in Headford has been welcomed by a Galway county councillor.
Fine Gael councillor Andrew Reddington said the new LED lighting would vastly improve visibility in the town.
Cllr Reddington said; “Over the next few weeks there will be a lights transformation of Headford. Stage one of the project will be the removal of old ESB poles and moving overhead wires underground, and new LED lighting will be put in to improve the visibility of the top of the town. Stage two of the project will be after Christmas which will entail resurfacing.
“Headford received funding of €100,000 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme for a range of improvements including upgrading and redesigning of public lighting. It is quite a big project but one which Headford will benefit from, it is envisaged that there will not be a huge amount of disruption involved in the project. And funding for this project has to be used before end of year.”
Cllr Reddington also stated that criticism directed towards the council executive for any delays was unwarranted.
He said; “Any delay in town and village enhancement is unfairly directed at council officials. There is a huge amount of work involved in any project and any delay is due to health and safety requirements being met.
“I give huge praise to the council officials who have to liaise with Electric Skyline and the ESB. There is a massive amount involved in such a project with any development in a town, it may cause distress to the public as there will be a traffic management plan in place but the end result will enhance the public image of Headford.
“I want to thank the allocation which was given by Minister Michael Ring’s Department and also to thank the engineering staff in theGalway County Council who made the application.”
