NUI Galway becomes officially designated a University of Sanctuary

Students Union welcome institutions new designation

NUI Galway was this week designated as an official University of Sanctuary, requiring it to be more inclusive to refugees, asylum seekers, and Travellers, and scholarships have been offered to members of these groups to attend the university.

The NUIG Students’ Union has welcomed the designation. The campaign began in 2016 and was student led from its inception. The SU was involved in the process through running awareness campaigns and sitting on the steering committee. The designation will improve access, inclusion and visibility of students from ethnic minority communities at NUI Galway.

“We are so proud NUI Galway is now an official University of Sanctuary," said SU president Clare Austick, Students’ Union president. "The SU has been proud to support it. It’s so important the university is seen as a welcoming and accessible space for all our students from every background and circumstance.”
