Lyons welcomes four new bus shelters for the west of the city

Shelters to be located on Shangort Road, Ballymoneen Road, Barna Road, and Knocknacarra

Four new bus shelters are to be provided in the west of the city - on the Shangort Road, Ballymoneen Road, Barna Road, and Knocknacarra - a move one councillor has said will lead to "more people using public transport".

The new bus shelters will be located on the Shangort Road, outside the entrance to the Oldfield estate; on the Ballymoneen Road, near the entrance to Seacrest and opposite the entrance to Westbrook; on the Barna Road, close to the junction between the Barna Road and Knocknacarra Cross; and opposite the entrance to Salthill Caravan Park, Knocknacarra.

Independent Galway City West councillor Donal Lyons has welcomed the new shelters, had made a submission to the Galway City Council earlier this year calling for bus shelters on these routes.

"The locations I proposed were surveyed and assessed against a number of criteria, including passenger numbers boarding at the stop; sufficient space to fit the bus shelter on public land; impact on adjoining property; and where there was requirement for additional civil works, making the installation prohibitively costly," said Cllr Lyons.

Following an assessment by the National Transport Authority, 13 locations in the city were approved for funding under Phase 1 and shelters will be provided at these various bus stop locations in 2020. "All of these bus stops are used extensively," said Cllr Lyons. "I believe the necessary infrastructure needs to be in place if the public will be enticed to avail of public transport."
