'The Scottish Play' - as Gaeilge

FibĂn present a modern, alternative take, on the Bard's most violent play

SHAKESPEARE'S MOST violent play; a powerful musing on greed, ambition, political ruthlessness, and guilt; and excuse for thespians to indulge in ridiculous and illogical superstitions, MacBeth is a play of many facets.

First performed in 1606, and inspired by everything from witch trials in the 1590s to old British histories, Shakespeare's shortest tragedy will be staged as Gaeilge as Mac an Bheatha by Fibín in Tully Hall, Connemara, (Sunday November 23 and Monday 24 ) and the Connacht Printworks, Market Street (Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 ).

Directed by Philip Doherty from a translation by Sean O'Tarpaigh, Mac an Bheatha has been re-imagined as taking place in the secret club of a gang of ultra-violent nationalists. Will the prophecies of three punk-metal witches, and the goading of the ambitious Lady Macbeth (Liz Fitzgibbon ), prompt rebel soldier Mac an Bheatha (Lochlann Ó Mearáin ) to kill the leader of a new government, in order to succeed him on the throne of power?
