Eleven young Galway people will represent the county tomorrow Friday 15 November, when the RTÉ Youth Assembly on Climate, in association with the Houses of the Oireachtas, will host the Youth Assembly which will be convened in Dáil Éireann.
The event will see 157 young Irish people from 10 to 17 years of age focus and debate on the following themes; environment, economics, food and farming, power and education.
The Galway delegates include:
Elisha O’Grady, a student of Salerno but currently undertaking her transition year at Coláiste Naomh Éinne on Inis Mór is one of the delegates attending the assembly. “I was awarded a Green Schools Regional Ambassador Award in 2018 for green schools initiatives at Salerno. I hope to personally articulate the seriousness of the climate crisis in Dublin on Friday. It is a wonderful opportunity for my peers and I to influence change at national level as we are too young to vote,” she said.
Paschal Walsh, a Transition Year student from Clarinbridge is another delegate who is especially interested in the impact of animal agribusiness on the environment. — “I was motivated to apply to be a part of this assembly as I believe climate action is in order. For too long, we have argued about its existence and protested for awareness; now, we need realistic, tangible solutions to this crisis implemented. I want to take this opportunity to shine light on proposals that demand radical but necessary policy change,” he said.
Sorcha Crumlish from Spiddal attends Coláiste Einde in Salthill. — “I’ve been really interested in the climate change for the past few years. I went to European Youth Parliament Regionals and Nationals where I was a part of the environmental committees. I helped organize a first thought talk for the Galway International Arts Festival with Catriona Crowe and Eamonn Ryan called ‘Climate Change and the Next Generation‘. I go to the Friday’s for Future marches. I think Climate Change is the most important issue at the moment and we need to do everything we can do undo the damage,” she said.
Indira Kelly has had a passion for our planet since ‘greenschool’ in national school and have taken part in climate strikes and projects on sustainability to raise awareness on the climate crisis that we are currently facing.
Other Galway delegates include Holly Cosgrove, Katelyn Culleton, Fiona Lohan, Saebh Mannion, Diarmuid McKeagney, Sean Power, Tara O’Neill.
The event will be chaired by Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl. The delegates gathering from across the Republic of Ireland will convene in Leinster House to establish what they would like to see as the next urgent steps for Ireland and present them to the nation live from the Dáil Chamber in a News2day special live broadcast on RTÉ2 and on Oireachtas TV.
