SORCHA RICHARDSON'S music has been declared "cinematic, relatable, and completely and utterly heartwrenching" by The Line of Best Fit and as "ultra-catchy" by The Guardian.
Galway will see why when the Irish singer-songwriter plays the upstairs bar of the Róisín Dubh on Friday November 22 at 8pm. Inspired by Sharon Van Etten, Arcade Fire, Phoebe Bridgers, and Julia Jacklin, Richardson's own reputation has been built on the singles ‘Ruin Your Night’, ‘Petrol Station’ and ‘Can’t We Pretend’.
However, an ambition to work on the broader scale of an album eventually took hold. “Releasing singles was fun because I felt a lot of freedom to move around creatively," she said, "but I'm excited to present a more 360 version of what I have in my head. It lets me tell a more complete story." The result is her debut album, First Prize Bravery, released last Friday.
It was recorded in Los Angeles with Alex Casnoff, the producer of several of her singles and previously a member of the bands Dawes and Harriet. They completed the album within a month, with Richardson on vocals and guitar, and Casnoff on synths and piano. Touring in Ireland resulted in the realisation that “the songs that are the most fun to play are the ones that feel most like a band”. This inspired the album’s live, guitar-based, core.
Tickets are available from www.roisindubh.net; OMG@Zhivago, Shop Street; and the Róisín Dubh.
