Athenry is to get a new fire station, with the facility expected to be located on the outskirts of the town, while the local Gaelscoil Riada has been approved for new facilities.
The Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government has granted approval for the new fire station. The design phase for the station can now proceed, as can progress towards the tender process. Discussions with the IDA about the site on the outskirts of the town are at an advanced stage.
The news has been welcomed by the Minister of State, and Galway East TD, Sean Canney. “I have been working closely with the acting chief fire officer for Galway, Paul Duffy, and Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy, and his department officials and I want to acknowledge all of their input in reaching a successful conclusion to this initiative,” he said.
In further good news for Athenry, the Department of Education and Skills granted approval to Gaescoil Riada to refurbish its toilets. “Rural schools need our support so they can improve and expand the facilities they offer,” said Minister Canney. “I am delighted we continue to provide them with the funding they need.”
