An average of three life buoys go missing every week along the River Corrib in acts of "wanton vandalism".
A spokesperson for the Galway City Council says the life buoys which are being stolen or thrown into the city's waterways is a "big issue of concern".
Currently there are 60 life buoy locations along the city's waterways including the River Corrib, canals, and the seashore.
"Life buoy locations in the city are inspected every week and on average two to three life buoys go missing.
"Life buoys are there for members of the public to use in cases of emergency. This is more than an act of wanton vandalism as tampering with this equipment could affect the process of saving someone's life."
The spokesperson warns that anyone found to be interfering with a life buoy would be reported to the gardai.
The news comes after a local river rescue group called on public representatives to join a patrol and see the abuse of facilities for themselves.
Speaking to Galway Bay FM, Arthur Carr of Claddagh Watch said a recent patrol witnessed revellers throw a life ring into the river.
He also highlighted the area between Jurys Inn and O'Brien's bridge as being particularly badly affected.
