Druid to stage The Cherry Orchard in 2020

Tom Murphy's adaptation of Chekhov classic will be Druid's first major production for next year

DRUID THEATRE Company has announced its first major production for 2020 - a staging of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard in a version by the late, great, Tom Murphy.

Directed by Garry Hynes, the play will star Derbhle Crotty and see Rachel Feeney making her Druid debut. The cast will also feature Aaron Monaghan, Garrett Lombard, Rory Nolan, and Marty Rea. It will be in the Black Box Theatre from Saturday February 22 to Saturday March 7.

Times are changing. An old way of life is dying out. A family faces extinction. A country prepares for revolution, but what will become of the cherry orchard? Regarded as Chekhov’s masterpiece, this 1903 work explores land, legacy, and the struggle between tradition and change. Adapted by Tom Murphy in 2004, this will be the first major production of the Tuam writer's work since his death in 2018.

"It feels right for Druid to revisit Tom Murphy’s work during Galway 2020," said artistic director Garry Hynes. "It is a privilege to have worked closely with Tom for so many years and a great honour to once again celebrate Tom’s work with our Galway audiences."

Tickets are on-sale from www.druid.ie and the Town Hall (091 - 569777 and www.tht.ie ).
