A recent report published by the UK Institute of the Motor Industry revealed more than 90 per cent of active auto mechanics are not qualified to work on electric cars.
Of those who are qualified, the vast majority are employed at manufacturer dealerships, thus presenting prospective electric vehicle buyers with little crash repair options.
This could be a result of higher fire risk from the flammable lithium contained in batteries, or greater electrocution risk to mechanics during repairs. However Frank Byrnes of Frank Byrnes Autobody Repairs in Glenascaul Park, Oranmore, says this has not prevented his company from launching its own electric-hybrid repair bay where autobody repairs can be carried out on both electric and hybrid motor vehicles.
This specifically designed repair bay is manned by Jonathan Morris, one of the senior panel beaters, a member of the team for more than five years who boasts 25 years overall industry experience. Morris recently received IMI Certification following specialised training for electric and hybrid vehicles.
"Training of staff members is vital to ensure professional standards were adhered to and that staff are educated in safety procedures," says Frank Byrnes. "To comply, Jonathan went away for the training required and certification which was obtained successfully. Future electric vehicle or hybrid owners can be confident Frank Byrnes panel beaters working on their cars have undergone training and auditing in the latest technology.
