Galway Pride elects new committee

Committee promises Pride 2020 will be 'the biggest yet'

Galway Community Pride has elected its new committee this week, and has pledged that next year's Pride celebrations will be "the biggest yet" with events happening "throughout the year and beyond" the traditional Pride week in August.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of Galway Pride, the longest running consecutive Pride event in the country. The annual parade was the most successful to date, with hundreds of people, as well political parties, business groups, and community organisations, walking from City Hall to Fr Griffin Park.

Galway Pride 2020 will take place from August 10 to 16 with the parade on Saturday 15, and again community groups, individuals, and businesses are invited to support or become involved. More information is available via galwaypride.com

Newly elected chair of Galway Pride, Aoibhin Keighron, said she was "very excited and grateful" to have been elected to the position. "We have an incredibly energised committee after a great 2019," she said. "That gives us the foundations to be more ambitious for Bród 2020 as we celebrate our city as the Capital of Culture. For a while now the LGBT+ community has been at the heart of the cultural landscape of Galway and we want to ensure that is highlighted. Pride is about community and this is one of the most important values to us and we aim to make this part of Galway Pride."
