Intermediate title is the prize in clash of the Gaels

It is the clash of the Gaels when Michael Breathnachs face Oughterard at 1pm on Sunday afternoon in the intermediate county final.

With both teams already promoted to senior football for 2020, this should help produce an open and exciting game.

Not only is a trophy up for grabs, but both teams will want to go through to the provincial championship and step up to senior football as intermediate champions.

The realisation that they have already achieved their immediate goals should lead to this being a more open and expansive game.

Oughterard's Tommy Finnerty has brought his club back to senior football by playing some super football and racking up some huge scores. Many of the plaudits will go to the Tierney brothers, Enda and Matthew, the two combining for big tallies right throughout the championship.Much of this success has been possible thanks to a strong defensive unit shown by conceding just six points last time out against Dunmore MacHales.

Michael Breathnachs have the experience of Fiontain O’Currain at midfield and will be out to make amends for losing the 2018 final after a replay and extra time. The massively impressive Ronan MacDonnacha has been the side's scorer-in-chief with a personal tally of 1-22 this year, 1-13 of that coming from play. Michael Breathnachs have had to grind out wins and got that stroke of luck in the semi-final with all of Cortoon Shamrocks' starting full forward line leaving the field with injury.

Pearse Stadium on Sunday afternoon will make for an entertaining game when these two Gaeltacht regions clash to see who becomes the intermediate champions for 2019.

Kilkerrin/Clonberne champions again

In ladies' football Kilkerrin/Clonberne made it seven senior titles in a row, thanks to a masterclass from Olivia Divilly who scored a total of 1-9 in her side's 1-16 to 1-6 win over Claregalway in Milltown on Sunday.

Captain Louise Ward lifted the cup after her side's eighth county title win in a row. Having first won intermediate in 2012, they have taken every senior title since.

Now now turn their minds to the Connacht club championship again. They have played Carnacon seven times since 2013, and with three wins, three losses and a draw on the record book, it is even-stevens between these two teams.
