Portumna’s Shorelines Arts Festival opens today

PORTUMNA WILL play host to four days of theatre, music, literature, film, visual art, family-friendly events, and a schools programme, when the south Galway town hots the Shorelines Arts Festival.

The festival runs from Thursday September 19 to Sunday 22, and among the highlights will be Fishamble: The New Play company presenting Before, the award-winning show written and performed by Pat Kinevane; and Gaeilgeoir and author Manchan Magan performing Arán Agus Im which explores the Irish language and local food, and will see butter being churned by the audience.

Wingin’ It will feature a cast of seasoned performers including Galway’s Orla McGovern in a night of improvisation led by suggestions from the audience; while Branar Téatar do Pháistí will present Rockin’ Rhymes, a music show for children and families based on nursery rhymes and other musical highlights.

Music at the festival will include gigs from Scullion and the ConTempo Quartet. As well as the annual Shorelines Art Exhibition at the Workhouse. there will also be a show by photographer Joe O’Shaughnessy, and an exhibition on the Portumna Mart.

Shorelines Film highlights include Cumar, which follows Galway-based artists Máirtín O’Connor, Mike McCormack, Rita Ann Higgins, Noeline Kavanagh, Róisín Seoighe, Pádraic Reaney and Tommy Tiernan.

There will also be family events including a selfie hunt, Púca puppets, as well as The Science of Dragons and the Science of Slime with Scientific Sue.
