Booklet on breaking bad news launched at UHG

A new publication aimed at helping staff deliver bad news to patients and loved ones in an “empathetic and respectful” manner has been launched at University Hospital Galway.

The information booklet entitled How Do I Break Bad News - A Guide for Staff was developed by a steering committee set up to improve services for dying patients and their families. It is also committed to enabling change in the culture of care regarding death and bereavement at Galway University Hospitals.

Experts say that bad news is delivered more effectively when the trauma is caused by the news itself - not by the manner in which it is delivered, according to a spokesperson for the HSE West.

“The group that developed the booklet feels that while the environment may not always be ideal if the person delivering the news does so with empathy and respect and in a manner that is clearly understood by the recipient, this is a good start for the person in helping him/her to come to terms with the news that is going to negatively impact on his/her life. It is essential therefore that all staff are adequately skilled to do so.”

Patricia O’Brien, clinical nurse specialist, palliative care, UHG, says the steering committee takes a “holistic and multi-perspective” approach.

“It looks to build on learning from patients, families, staff and from best practice elsewhere. It is a multidisciplinary group with representation from both UHG and Merlin Park University Hospital and from many other areas of care.”

The steering group aims to enhance the working culture and knowledge of staff and to help them care for the dying patient and the grieving family. The group welcomes the participation of staff and will consider suggestions, feedback or proposals for further projects.

Some of the topics dealt with in the booklet include:-

* The principles of breaking bad news to patients,

* How should I tell bad news?

* Breaking bad news to a sick child

* How do I handle difficult questions?

* When sudden death occurs

* Guidelines of giving bad news by telephone

The booklet is available in hard copy for staff at UHG and Merlin Park University Hospital and can also be accessed electronically through the hospital’s Q-pulse system. Education sessions are being provided for all staff at Galway University Hospitals in conjunction with the launch of the booklet.
