Galway hurlers and GAA enthusiasts are once again backing GOAL’s efforts to raise funds for AIDS-ravaged Uganda.
May 10 has been designated this year’s La na gClub GOAL Day, and this year’s aim is to build 125 houses for some of the most vulnerable families in Uganda.
According to local organiser Ronan Scully, there are an estimated 1.7 million orphans in Uganda, representing approximately 12 per cent of all children under 15 years of age. Of these, 790,000 have lost one or more parents as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
To mark the 125th anniversary of GOAL, the humanitarian aid agency is asking GAA members to help them provide 125 homes as part of GOAL’s housing support programme which builds new houses and rehabilitates existing homes to improve the conditions of vulnerable households. GOAL is also implementing a onstruction skills training programme to increase the number and quality of skilled tradespersons in the local community.
GOAL, which has many GAA patrons, including Kilkenny’s DJ Carey, Galway hurling legend Joe Connolly, and Micheál Ó Muircheartaig, has provided 900 homes to date and this year wants to to reach the thousand mark.
“We are confident this latest initiative will help us achieve this target. Houses can be built for €3,000 per unit, but donations of any value will be put to good use.”
GAA club members and clubs all over Ireland are being asked to hold fundraisers to celebrate La na gClub on May 10 for this GOAL project.
