Galway Masters in action in Europe

Many of Galway’s top Masters athletes are currently competing in the European Masters Track and Field competition in the Venice area of Italy.

Jim Phelan of GCH made the final of the O45 400m after two great qualifying rounds where he placed fifth with a fast time of 53.23, while Sean McDermott of Castlegar AC had an impressive run placing 10th in the men’s 1500m at O45 level.

Ian Egan competed on the Irish V50 Cross Country team and the squad was just outside the medals in fourth spot.

In the field events, Tommy Farragher of Corofin AC is also competing, and has achieved two top 10 finishes in the hammer throw and weight for distance so far. The championships continue this week.

Galway Cross Country fixtures

The local cross-country season kicks off in earnest over the next few weeks, with a full calendar of events upcoming.

Castlegar AC will host its annual cross-country event for juvenile and adult ages on Saturday September 21. The adult races will incorporate the Galway Novice Cross Country Championships.

The Galway Primary Schools Cross Country championships for 2019 takes place over two consecutive Tuesdays, September 24 and October 1 in Renmore, Galway city. Entry forms will be issued to schools early next week, and the semi-finals will take place on day one, with qualifiers advancing to the finals on the second day.

The Galway Cross Country championships will take place on October 6 and October 20, with the uneven ages at Juvenile level, U9 to U19, being held in the Palace Grounds in Tuam along with the adult senior and masters championships on the first day, and the juvenile even ages from U10 to U18 will be held in Bushfield, Loughrea, on day two, alongside the adult intermediate championships.
