I’m lucky enough to work from home, that is when I’m not being blasted by Atlantic gales, or lashed with rain on a site as I’m taking measurements and photographs in preparation for starting a garden design. As anyone whose office is in their home will tell you, this has upsides and downsides. One of the upsides is being able to snatch five or ten minutes in the garden at lunchtime if the weather is at all favourable. Today I had a chance to do just that, and it set me up for the rest of the afternoon. The sky was blue, the bright orange nasturtiums were blazing cheerfully along the fence and I could feel a soft breeze coming in from the coast – it was so refreshing and such a good way to clear the head.
It’s a popular time of year to start thinking about garden plans for the year ahead. As the round of summer holidays, visits and festivals gives way to the new season, it’s a good time to consider how you can get the most from your garden next summer and beyond.
I firmly believe that a garden should enhance your life and work for you, offering somewhere to relax and unwind, and refresh the spirit, as mine did today. Blessed as many of us are with large gardens, though, they are not always designed to suit our needs, and they often make work for us rather than the other way round – and let’s face it, who needs extra work? Which is why you might find yourself wondering as you spend another weekend mowing and tidying - just who’s in charge here? Thinking ahead and investing in a good set of garden plans puts you back in charge of your property and gives you the chance to reap the rewards of a well- planned outdoor space, whatever size it is.
As the evenings draw in and the nip in the air gets more pronounced, I’ll be venturing out to soak up the colour and energy of growing, living plants for as long as I can, charging up the internal batteries for the winter that’s getting closer- and making it seem that little bit shorter!
