Music — one of the great joys in life — is attainable and available through the internationally acclaimed teaching skills of Mary Bergin, widely acknowledged master of the tin whistle.
Mary Bergin has been running her tin whistle classes in Galway for more than 20 years, and in that time has shared her knowledge and skill with hundreds of students, both children and adults. All levels are catered for, from beginners through to intermediate and advanced. An important aspect of her teaching is also preparation of students for the music practical examinations, at both Junior Cert and Leaving Cert level. She is renowned for her success rate in this area.
While the levels catered for are wide ranging, the classes consist of small groups of students of a similar standard. Through her method of teaching, students learn by ear and receive the notation at the end of each class. They also have an opportunity to record Mary Bergin playing the tunes, which helps with their practice at home.
Classes are held on Thursdays at Áras na nGael, 45 Dominick Street. Children's classes are in the afternoon/evening, and the adult classes are at night.
In the past few years, Mary Bergin has published what many say is the definitive tutorial for the whistle, which is available to purchase at her classes, masterclasses, workshops, and also on her website www.maryberginwhistle.com
