Galway University Hospitals to hold annual ecumenical memorial service

Galway University Hospital’s [UHG and Merlin Park ] End of Life Care Committee will hold its annual ecumenical memorial service on Thursday September 12 at 7pm at the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill.

Claire McHugh, clinical nurse manager of the Corrib Ward, says staff welcome the opportunity to acknowledge the loss for bereaved families together with honouring and remembering the special people who died in the hospital’s care.

“The aim of the service is to provide a spiritual space to support families in the grief they are experiencing in a supportive and empathetic environment.

“The theme of this year’s service is ‘Memories’ and we are delighted to welcome back guest speaker Dr Helen Greally, the director of the psychology and support Services at Cancer Care West.”

The service will be led by hospital staff with representatives from Catholic, Church of Ireland, Methodist, and the Islamic faiths. Tea and coffee will be served after the service to provide families with an opportunity to meet with staff who cared for their relatives as well as to share their experience with other bereaved families.
