Galway to benefit from new SEAI funds

Households, businesses, and community and voluntary organisations in Galway have an opportunity to lower their energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint, under the latest round of Government funding from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.

This is the view of Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hOileáin, Sean Kyne, who pointed out that of the national allocation of more than €25 million, Galway communities are included in 16 projects receiving grant funding of €7.63 million.

Of this, €24,604 has been provided for Cómhar Caomhán Teo on Inis Oírr to provide a new heat pump, solar panels, windows, and doors. This funding is on top of funding of €478,369 allocated for the Aran Islands last year which has enabled extensive energy efficiency works for the communities.

The funding will also provide energy upgrades to Oughterard church, Portumna Town Hall, Ballinasloe and Tuam leisure centres, Corinthians RFC, and Loughrea Athletic Club, Castlegar GAA, Glinsk Community Centre, Ballinasloe Leisure Centre, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE ) Galway, Bon Secours Private Hospital, Corrib Shopping Centre, Supervalu Galway, Musgrave Market Place, Galway, Aviva, Galway, Cleary’s Insurance, Galway, NCBI charity shop Galway, Glynn’s Service Station, Carnmore, Connacht Hotel, Cómhar Caomhán Teo, Aran Islands, as well as to St Jarlath’s Court in Tuam and Mystical Rose Nursing Home in Claregalway.

According to Minister Kyne, the funding will allow households in Galway avail of improvements such as roof and wall insulation, heat pumps, LED lighting, solar PV panels, new energy-efficient doors and windows as well as smart energy controls.

The measures have also been welcomed by the Minister of State in the Department of Communication, Climate Action and the Environment, Seán Canney. “Cutting emissions is key to achieving our climate action targets,” he said. “The measures nationally are the equivalent of taking 11,000 combustion engine vehicles off the road.”
