Salthill Knocknacarra through to quarter-finals after championship's fourth round

Group one results:

Killererin 2-14 Barna 1-12

Milltown 1-10 St Michael's 1-12

Salthill-Knocknacarra 1-14 An Spideal 1-12

There is still all to play for in group one of the Galway Senior Club Football Championship with only Salthill-Knocknacarra guaranteed a place in the quarter-final, thanks to their win over An Spideal last Sunday.

A 49th minute goal from John Maher was enough to see them past the 2018 intermediate champions while continuing their unbeaten record, winning 1-14 to 1-12.

A super display from Killererin saw them defeat Barna on Saturday afternoon, a penalty apiece from Shane Hughes and James Boyle saw them win 2-14 to 1-12 and begin to ease any relegation worries. A win against St Michael's in the final round would see them qualify for a preliminary quarter-final which would show more improvement again after a strong end to 2018.

Both Milltown and Barna are in danger of entering the round-robin relegation stages after more losses at the weekend. If An Spideal avoid a loss to Barna on the final day, they will, at the very minimum, guarantee their senior status for 2020, while putting Barna in further trouble.

Group two results:

Corofin 2-18 Claregalway 2-11

Tuam 4-15 St James 2-9

Annaghdown 1-15 Leitir Mor 1-11

Sunday evening in Tuam Stadium, Claregalway played Corofin in the first irrelevant match of this year’s championship with both teams already guaranteed progress to the next stage, along with Tuam Stars after their win over St James on Saturday evening.

Corofin are the only team with a 100 per cent record in this year’s championship, while stretching their unbeaten record in the Galway club championship to 40 matches.

A young and talented Claregalway team continue to impress throughout the championship, and pushed the current champions all the way until the current Frank Fox holders went clear in the final 10 minutes.

Tuam Stars continued their resurgence in form by qualifying for the 2019 quarter-finals thanks to a win over St James. Jamie Murphy continues to be the standout player of the season, while the defence remains solid, thanks in part to the return of Darragh O’Rourke from Australia.

Leitir Mor will be in the relegation shake-up this year after a fourth straight loss of this championship. Who will join them will be down to St James v Annaghdown in the final game of the group after Annaghdown finally got themselves off the mark with a win over Leitir Mor.

Group three results:

Caherlistrane 1-9 Monivea-Abbey 0-17

An Ceathru Rua 0-6 Moycullen 4-23

Mountbellew/Moylough 1-14 Killanin 0-13

Moycullen continue to top group three after a huge win over An Ceathru Rua, with Mountbellew-Moylough and Monivea-Abbey also on six points after also winning at the weekend.

After losing a fourth game on the trot, Caherlistrane look in real trouble in their hopes to retain their senior status and will have lamented the loss of Cormac Bane to retirement due to precautions over a further concussion injury in the first championship game of the year. With Moycullen left to play in the final round, it does not get any easier for Caherlistrane.

Carraroe are still to play Mountbellew/Moylough, and look unlikely to avoid a relegation battle.

The third game in the final day of this group will see Monivea-Abbey face Killanin, the winners qualifying for the other preliminary quarter-final spot to face whichever team comes third in group one.
