Salthill Devon to host charity blitz

A special one day five-a-side fundraising soccer blitz takes place on Saturday April 25 in Drom in aid of the Galway Simon Community.

The event is open to soccer clubs, corporate teams, and social teams in a bid to raise €5,000 for the local charity which provides accommodation and support for homeless people in the west of Ireland.

Commencing at 2pm, all teams will play at least four games in their round-robin leagues with the top teams proceeding into the knock out stages.

Entry is €200 per team of 10 players (five players and five subs ). All players will receive a tournament T-shirt, while trophies will be presented to the winners.

Barry McCann, community fundraiser for the Galway Simon Community says the charity has experienced a marked increase in the number of people contacting its day centre in Galway.

“One of the terrible outcomes of the current economic climate is that as more people lose their jobs, they are struggling to find money for basic things such as rents and food. Last year, our day centre provided more than 5,000 meals to men, women, and children in Galway who were homeless or at risk of homelessness, and this figure is probably going to be a lot higher for 2009.”

Anyone wishing to enter a team can contact Barry 091-589415 or email [email protected].
