Releasing your “old” story to create a better one!

“Life is like a flower when you let it go and like a thorn when you hold on”. Chariji

Sometimes in life, we find ourselves in unhappy situations not knowing how to extricate ourselves or let go. Due to lack of self-esteem or self-compassion, we may get entangled and stay in relationships that are difficult and this holding on may keep us from reaching our own goals.

While holding onto grudges and bad memories we create stories of blame. We often like to hold onto our familiar version of these stories and not take responsibility for our own feelings and by holding on, we keep ourselves from fulfilling our own potential.

To find your joy in living and achieve your true potential in life you need to learn how to let go. You need to be able to let go of your old story and create a new one. What’s past is past and cannot be changed and the future depends on how well you live today. Being able to live in the present is the key to a happy fulfilled life. We need to open up and enjoy what is unfolding right in front of us being present for all parts of the journey easy and hard, good and bad.

Through meditation practice, it’s possible to learn to live in the present. Meditation teaches us to observe our thoughts as they arise and not identify with them. When emotions are stirred within, we learn to observe them and not react but to respond. The more we can simply watch our thoughts come and go without attaching our identity to them, the easier letting go becomes

When there’s a lot of negative attachment to the past we may need help in letting go. Psychotherapy or Counselling would be beneficial in helping this process. Journaling and writing can also be a cathartic experience.

“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become” Carl Jung
