A guided walk introducing participants to the delights of Coole Park is among the events taking place at Coole during Heritage Week. The walk, which takes place from 11am to 12.30pm today, will take in the history of the park, its wildlife, landscape, and the walled garden.
A bat walk and talk will take place in Coole tomorrow (Friday ) from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. Learn all about the mysterious life of bats on this night time walk around Coole Park with a National Parks and a Wildlife Service ranger. Wear warm clothes, strong footwear, and bring a torch. This walk is weather dependent and will not take place if it is too wet.
Coole Park will host a number of special events to mark Water Heritage Day on Sunday. As an island nation, our history and our heritage have been shaped by the sea and our rivers, lakes and wetlands. Stories, songs, and poems passed down through generations have preserved deep-rooted traditions and connections with water. To recognise the unique status of Coole Turlough the National Parks ahd Wildlife Service has organised a number of events over the course of the day in conjunction with the Local Authority Waters Programme and the Geological Survey Ireland.
The day starts with fun activities for children from 11am to 12 noon. Discover the properties and power of water with activities and experiments to spark the imagination.
At 12 noon there will be a screening of Coole River, a beautiful short film with aerial photography following the course of the river that flows into the turlough at Coole Park, through Gort, rising in the Slieve Aughty hills. The film is 30 minutes in length.
A presentation and discovery walk around Coole Turlough will take place from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. This informative talk by Geological Survey Ireland about the turlough systems will fascinate and provide a glimpse into the wonderful world of water in this limestone environment. The talk will be followed by a guided walk to Coole Turlough to discuss the hydrology and ecology of this very special place that so inspires poets and artists.
