The role of the first members of Dáil Éireann from Galway is highlighted in an exhibition entitled Dáil 100, which is hosted by the Galway County Council, and which opened this week.
The first Dáil met on January 19 1919 in the Mansion House, Dublin, and was attended by 27 of the 73 Sinn Féin MPs elected at the 1918 UK election. Among the attendees were Galway MPs Pádraic Ó Máille (Connemara and Galway city ), Bryan Cusack (North Galway ), Galway's 1916 Rising leader Liam Mellows (East Galway ), and Frank Fahy (South Galway ).
The exhibition features images from and information on that first meeting, and how it has shaped the State today. It will also outline the ways in which the work of Dáil Éireann has changed and developed since 1919.
The exhibition is in Áras an Chontae, Prospect Hill, and runs until Friday September 13. It is open to the public between 9am and 4pm, Mondays to Fridays. All are welcome.
