New Galway jazz session starts tonight

Exploring the music of Thelonious Monk

THE MUSIC of jazz visionary Thelonious Monk will be celebrated in Galway this evening in what will be the first of a new series of jazz nights taking place each Thursday throughout August.

JAZZGate: The Music of Thelonious Monk, starts at 9pm, and takes place in The Black Gate Cultural Centre, St Francis Street. The event will feature Matthew Berrill (saxophone ), Greg Felton (piano ), Aengus Hackett (guitar ), Dan Bodwell (double bass ), and Matt Jacobson (drums ), performing music from Monk's peerless back catalogue.

Admission is €10. JAZZGate is curated by Galway musician Aengus Hackett. The next JazzGate is on Thursday August 8 at 9pm, featuring trumpeter Bill Blackmore, and focusing on the music of Miles Davis.
