It’s never really finished, to be honest. You can plan, certainly, and that undoubtedly gives you a better result – but it’s a living thing, and like all living things, it needs some looking after.
Clients sometimes say to me “I just want it to be done and dusted”, and I understand that approach, I really do. Who likes upheaval and having to do things? So investing in design and sorting out your hard landscaping is something that, once completed, will go a long way towards the garden being ‘done’. Planting plans created for your specific site, with its soil, aspect and other unique characteristics, will take the guesswork out of what to plant, where, how many, what size they will get to, and whether you’ll be able to maintain them with the time you have available.
Following your garden designer’s instructions as to ground preparation, mulching and aftercare will mean your plants have the best start in life and should keep your garden looking lovely for a long time to come. Careful choice of materials, with a well-thought out layout, will mean the outdoor space enhances your life instead of making lots of extra work for you.
So once these things are done, you can expect to sit back and enjoy the results, for sure. But you probably know by now that with most things in life, if you look after them, they look after you. Those gorgeous garden plants are growing in soil – not an inert substance, but a living, breathing ecosystem teeming with microscopic organisms, constantly changing and evolving. Plants grow – people grow. Weather happens. Just like the insides of our homes, our cars or our closet contents, a fresh look – even if it’s only every decade or two – keeps things fresh and interesting. (Okay, I lied about the closet – it might be slightly more frequently than that. ) Just remember, that space outside is a little bit of this precious planet – you don’t have to constantly tend it or work at it – quite the reverse in fact. But remembering it’s there, growing, evolving, and sometimes needing just a little attention, makes for a stronger relationship between the two of you – which can only be a good thing for both of you. It is alive, you know……
