Spirit of the Garden or Slightly Sore Thumb?

Get it right and it looks like it’s always been there, the spirit of the garden in stone or metal, sprung fully formed from the lusciously planted surroundings. Get it wrong and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Sculpture in the garden – it’s a tricky one to get right.

Taste in art is a very personal thing, as is taste in everything, really. What you choose to adorn your walls, home or garden with is completely up to you and the very thing that draws you to a particular piece might send someone else running for cover. It’s your space and whatever you choose, you need to “own it” as the coaches say nowadays. Of course, you also need to pay for it, install it, and live with it for quite a long time (how long, I suppose, depends on how much you paid for it and how much that hurt ), so there are a few things to bear in mind before you commit, whether that’s to a piece from the hottest artist on the planet – or a garden gnome.

Firstly, think about where it’s going to go – where can you see it from? Is it forming a focal point at the end of a vista, or will it surprise you as you round a corner? Should it sit in splendid isolation on a lawn or be surrounded by a supporting cast of plants? Your garden designer can help you with this.

Secondly, consider scale – how will the piece you like fit with the other elements in the garden? Will it dwarf everything else or is it too small to make any impact? Remember that scale outdoors can seem completely different to indoors – my advice on this is usually go big or go home.

Style matters too – a classical stone statue might suit your garden, but a more abstract form might better complement your personality – this is really a personal thing, so if you love it, go for it. As I often say to my clients, there’s no need to go looking for the perfect piece – it will find you!
