Ó Cuív demands cuts to rural schools be reversed

Changes introduced in the pupil-teacher-ratio for two, three and four teacher schools must be reversed as they have resulted in many rural schools losing a teacher.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív, who is calling on the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, to reverse the changes which have been in place since 2012.

According to Dep Ó Cuív, the changes have left many rural schools “isolated and under resourced”. He acknowledged that since 2015, measures have been introduced to improve the pupil-teacher-ratio in schools generally, but he accused the Government of displaying a “resolute refusal to do anything for the small schools”.

“This is just another disappointing example of Government abandoning rural Ireland,” he said. “Two, three, and four teacher schools have made a significant impact on this country.”
