Funding for coastal protection works at Oran Island

Funding of €29,000 has been provided for coastal protection measures to be taken at Oran Island, Oranmore. The works will protect homes in the area from flooding and tidal events.

The funding was secured by the Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish, who has held a number of meetings with the Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Kevin Boxer Moran, and the Galway County Council officials, on this issue.

He said the impending flood mitigation works and coastal protection scheme would be “a great relief to the residents of the area, who have been living in fear of their homes flooding every time there is a big storm”. The measures proposed involved strengthening and raising the existing walls. The works are expected to get under way soon.

The funding has also been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton. “Climate change is now an observable phenomenon with Galway experiencing several severe weather events in recent years,” she said. “This additional coastal protection will assist in protecting those living in Oran Island and surrounding areas in Oranmore.”
