‘Follow your passion’ — could a sign be any more obvious?

Every College of Naturopathic Medicine student or graduate has a personal story of why he/she decided on this career path. Mine was presented to me in a day of ‘signs’.

On my way to my mundane part-time job I was listening to one of the radio stations interviewing a successful businessman who gave everything up to open up a craft beer-making business out of his shed. His reason? We spend the majority of our life (well, most of us ) at work; why not do something you are passionate about so that you look forward to doing it instead of dreading going to work?

This made total sense to me, and I didn’t have to ruminate long before realising what my passion was: nutrition and health. Mmm – ok, now what? On the short walk to my office I picked up one of the local newspapers and upon getting to my desk quickly paged through it to see if anything caught my eye. Something did. A large advertisement for studying nutritional therapy at the College of Naturopathic Medicine. I was always passing on health tips to friends and family, well aware that they were just being polite in listening, but what if I had an actual qualification behind me?

I now had recognised where my passion lay and I also had a means of pursuing it… in the space on an hour.

Starting college in my mid-forties was quite daunting, especially with two young children at home, but meeting and making new friends (students and lecturers alike ) and finding my tribe was so exhilarating. It was a dream come true being able to connect and study with people who were as passionate about nutrition as I was.

I am now embarking on a new career two months before my 50th birthday but feel mentally and physically at the top of my game. Take it from me, it is never too late to follow your passion.

Change career. Gain new skills. Help others. Become a nutritional therapist. Study in class or online.
