Tourism in Salthill can be given a major boost if the Galway City Council has the courage to transform Leisureland into an international business and conference centre for the west of Ireland.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway City West candidate Peter Keane. He believes that investing in Leisureland is the key to attracting year round family and business tourism to Salthill.
“Leisureland is an established landmark in Salthill and provides a golden opportunity to introduce new business into the area all year round,” said Mr Keane. “With a little investment in refurbishing, it has the potential to become an international business and conference centre for the west of Ireland.”
Mr Keane believes that such an investment would have “an immediate knock-on benefit” for the existing businesses and hotels in the surrounding area.
“We need a vision for the facility which will bring it up to international standards and allow us to compete on the international stage,” he said. “The structure is already there and it is already recognised as a popular family destination.”
However Mr Keane said Leisureland is “currently underutilised” and that “investing in Leisureland is one way to bring business back to Salthill”.
