Gated alleyways in Castle Park are a magnet for illegal dumping and it is the responsibility of the Galway City Council, and not just the residents, to deal with this problem.
This is the view of Labour’s Galway City East candidate Derek Nolan who said Castle Park residents feel the council has “turned its back on the issue”.
“I know of one case where the residents went to great efforts to clean up an alley themselves, only to be charged by the council for taking away the material,” he said. “This is not the action of a council working with residents, but one of a Council completely disowning its responsibility.”
Mr Nolan is calling on the council to put in place a regular schedule of works for alley maintenance and to investigate and prosecute those who are dumping.
