It is "unacceptable" that Galway does not have an appropriate facility to allow for the disposal of paint, and other similar, potentially toxic waste products, and City Hall is "failing to address" this "serious environmental issue".
This is the view of Labour's Galway City Central candidate, John McDonagh, who is calling on the Galway City Council to address the issue of left-over paint and paint containers at many households.
"At present there is no facility in the city for the disposal of paint and similar products and containers," he said. "Inevitably some of that waste ends up in landfill, posing a serious threat to the ground water at landfill sites. Apart from the occasional opportunity to bring such waste to a council collection point every few years, householders have no option but to travel to a Barna Waste facility outside Tuam to dispose of such waste at a fee."
Mr McDonagh said that, if elected on May 24, he would pursue this issue to ensure "such a facility is provided as part of a comprehensive, safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly waste disposal service" for the city.
