Doing it for the Kids……

If you’re a parent you’ll know that along with the incredible joy children bring, there are always….costs. As a loving parent, you take this in your stride, but if you’re like me, you’d prefer to invest wisely when it comes to playing and leisure, so that your little darlings get the most value out of what you’re spending that hard earned money on. The throwaway culture of recent times has led to so much waste, and toys have to be one of the biggest culprits. We have some lovely wooden toys that provided hours of amusement and are still in my office today, coming down from the shelf occasionally when a client has to bring a little one along to a meeting. But the number of plastic things that broke after a few outings – and therefore couldn’t be passed on to the thrift shop, for instance – still bothers me.

When you’re investing in a garden, then, it makes so much sense to recognise that those chubby toddlers will be teenagers almost before you know it, and having the space designed with the future as well as the present in mind is a no-brainer. That way the whole family can enjoy the garden right now, with features suitable for little ones, and continue doing so when those little ones are towering over you! Planning from the start is the best way to do this so that you invest in things that can be adapted as needs change.

Careful planning involves thinking about how the space will be used right now – enclosure and safety are usually paramount for very small children, and as they grow bigger, finding ways to encourage them out into the fresh air is high on many parents wish-list. Making sure your planting will stand up to the odd football or wrestling match mightn’t be a bad idea either!
