John Keoghs – The Lock Keeper, on Dominick Street, has been named as Gastro Pub of the Year in Galway by the Restaurants Association of Ireland for 2019. It has been quite the year for this West End pub as it was also named as Pub of the Year by McKenna's Guide for 2019 in January.
Open for dinner seven nights a week, John Keogh's is launching its weekend lunch menu which is available every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm.
“Galway's West End is getting busier and busier with daytime trade and tourists visiting," said Matt Hall, owner of John Keogh's. "We want to be able to offer great food to people on the weekends at lunchtime in our pub. People can just pop in and eat a great bowl of soup, or enjoy a fish dish, or of course the pub classic, the burger, steak sandwich, and fish and chips. The evenings kick off here from 5pm so the weekender lunch gives people another chance to enjoy eating on the other side of the river in Galway.”
The food is a celebration of life on the west coast, and the close association of land and sea. A commitment to locally sourced produce, working with Galway fishmongers and west of Ireland butchers means that the food reflects the season and the Galway address.
The John Keogh's weekend lunch menu is all about comfort. Lighter bits starting from €6 including the pub bravas which brings together rooster potato wedges, Irish chorizo, and garlic aioli, or a spiced tempura prawn with fennel and chilli salad and avocado aioli, and of course there is the west coast seafood chowder and a gluten free vegan friendly soup of the day, all served with in house baked Irish soda bread and Cuinneog butter.
The main event at lunch time centres around the in-house hand rolled ravioli with sweet potato, ricotta, butternut squash, orange aged parmesan, and a side of your choice, and of course being located in Galway fish is a highlight of any menu worth its salt.
At lunchtime, the John Keogh's fish pie with seasonally caught fish, creamy mash potato, house salad, and a white wine cream sauce is always a winner, or the house favourite beer battered fish of the day with chunky tartar sauce, lemon, and those twice cooked chips. For the meat lover there is the Gilligan's 8oz beef burger served in a brioche bun with onion jam, Irish cheddar cheese, and twice cooked chips, or the dry aged black Angus striploin steak sandwich, all paired with a nice glass from the extensive wine list.
This multiple award winning West End pub, which will celebrate three years in business this summer, is now one of Galway's best loved pubs for food, as well as being a lively spot to head out with friends for drinks, and it has become the private party location for people to come to together to mark those special occasions..
