BORN IN Zimbabwe and raised in Dublin, Percy Chamburuka is Jafaris, a poet, dancer, and rapper making uncompromising, fresh hip hop, and he plays the Róisín Dubh this weekend.
Jafaris, described as "one of the most exciting new prospects from Irish rap’s recent rising wave” by the NME, recently released the single 'Invisible', the third track to be taken from his debut album, Stride, which The Irish Times called "a unique triumph”.
“'Invisible' is me entertaining my ego with no filter,” explains Jafaris about the song. “I’m shouting about my accolades, my gifts, and my work ethic. I wanted this video to be the first time people see the darker side of me." The song's video casts Jafaris as the kingpin in an organised crime epic. Directed by Nathan Barlow, the cinematic visual follows Jafaris as he leads boxing matches, gambles, and reconciles himself with therapy.
He has played Eurosonic 2018, Longitude, Electric Picnic, Forbidden Fruit, Hard Working Class Heroes, and Other Voices.
Jafaris plays the Róisín this Saturday [May 4] at 8pm. Support is from Celavidmai. Tickets are available from www.roisindubh.net; the Ticket Desk at OMG@Zhivago, Shop Street; and The Róisín Dubh.
