Woman threatens to pay gang member €20,000 to kill garda, court hears

Bench warrant issued for abusive woman’s arrest

A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of a woman who threatened to pay a Limerick gang member €20,000 to put a bullet between the eyes of a garda.

The Galway District Court heard last Monday how Marie McCarthy, who failed to appear, had also threatened to find out where other gardai lived and have them all killed. The 35-year-old with an address at 19 Sycamore Court, Renmore, had been charged with threatening and abusive behaviour at Dalysfort Road, Salthill, on January 19, 2009.

Garda Kieran Quinn told the court that at 9.10pm he observed the defendant cursing at a member of the public who was entering Salthill Garda station. Garda Quinn said that the person was told to “f**k off” and had been quite shocked at the abuse. The defendant who was extremely drunk then turned her abuse onto Garda Quinn telling him that she would contact a member of a Limerick gang and pay €20,000 to have him dealt with.

“She told me she would get a member of a gang to put a bullet between my eyes,” said Garda Quinn.

The court then heard that the Garda station had to be “closed off” for 10 to 15 minutes while McCarthy was being processed. Garda Melissa Nallen, the member in charge of the station at the time, gave evidence that while the defendant was in custody she was “extremely un-coooperative” by refusing to give her date of birth and address and then threatened gardai.

“She threatened to find where we lived and kill us all,” added Garda Nallen.

After hearing that the defendant has 51 previous convictions Judge Mary Fahy then issued a bench warrent for McCarthy’s arrest so that sentencing could be carried out.
